les défis du Ghana // The Challenges of Ghana

I never imagined taking a political science class outside of the USA would be so interesting.  This is what I am slowly coming to realize as my class at UG (University of Ghana) press on.

One class in particular, US policy towards Africa, seems to consistently challenge my political opinions, but in a way that inspires growth of course.

Every day we talk about US policy towards Africa during certain stages of history.  The class consists mainly of Ghanaian students and a handful of American or foreign students.  What I can deduce from the negative murmurs occurring around me is that there is a general dislike for American policies among the Ghanaian students as it concerns Ghana and Africa in general.

On my end, I am finding that I am often feeling the need to counter-act these negative comments with positive ones about the US, but why?  I have never felt this need before and maybe it is because the Ghanaian students outnumber the American ones completely, but all I know is that these feelings continue to arise.

I wrote about these feelings a couple of posts back and now I finally think I have realized what it is:  What drives me to want to defend the US is a sense of nationalism.  The very same feelings the Ghanaina students have towards their own country.  So in a peculiar way, we may find solidarity based on this desire to stand  up for our own countries.  But I am really not happy with this conclusion.

One reason I wanted to study abroad in Africa was to participate in what I deemed the “globalization of the mind”.  A process where I would become more open to the world and the opinions in it and here I am kind of, sort of doing the opposite.  Now that is not to say I will completely turn my back on my country of origin, but it does mean I will turn the combativeness down and notch and see US policy from the Ghanaian perspective.  That IS why I flew 5,000 miles to Ghana in the first place right?

I hope everyone who reads this recognizes that this entire trip is a process to “globalize my mind’ so to speak, one that I am discovering step by step and recording here on this blog and sharing for both myself and everyone who chooses to read it.  I am an opinionated person and slowly but surely my thoughts are being influenced by my time here in Ghana so please be patient with what may seem like obvious realizations and enjoy the journey just as much as I am. J

The state of Black Beauty / L’état de la beauté noir

Since I have been in Africa, especially on the campus I have been observing the Ghanaian women and their beauty habits just to see if it was any different from that of Black women in America

My expectations were as follows:
Mes attentes ont été les suivants :

1.      1.  More natural hair
Beacoup de cheveux naturelle

2.     2.  Clearer, darker and more beautiful and smooth skin ( I don’t know why but I just feel like the vitamin d from the African sun would just do wonders for  skin)

That was all I came up with before I left.  But when I got here I realized that my expectations were a little off…

First off there are weaves EVERYWHERE…not that it is any different from the USA, but if I did not know any better I would think I never left America.

I have nothing against weaves but I just wasn’t ready for their frequency here in Ghana

Secondly, there IS clear, beautiful, dark skin almost everywhere, but its presence is overshadowed by the alarming number of skin bleaching ads -____-

I am talking HUGE billboards with skin bleaching lotion, body wash and other products…The hatred for one’s skin tone is still alive and well…even in Africa

Sad but true.
Triste mais vrai.

Observations of a temporary expat / Les observations d’un expat temporaire

Being outside of the USA has allowed me to see just how central America is in the world…

Ignoring the fact that Obama’s face is on everything from crackers to toothbrushes, not that I am complaining, America is the topic, example and also bashing point of choice for many of my Ghanaian professors.

Now I am nothing close to a blind supporter of the USA but I can’t help but feel a certain pride mixed in with some shame when confronted with the exaltation, both good and bad, of my country

When my professor brings up the Iran-Contra affair and the Iraq war there is no getting over the embarrassment  BUT when America is criticized by a few for entering Libya BASED ONLY on Ghana’s previous relations with the country, that is when I must respectfully disagree.

I personally don’t have a concrete stance on NATO’s entrance into the Libyan conflict BUT Gadhafi has killed his own people for the sake of power and human right’s violations ARE human right’s violations…

But I digress…
Mais je m'égare...

My large point is that the centrality of the USA here in Ghana is potent and although I am temporarily separated from my native country, I will never escape it completely, whether I like it or not.

Cape Coast, Last Slave River, Elmina Slave Castle

Ce weekend nous avons pris un voyage à Cape Coast à voir The Last Slave River and The Slave Castle at Elmina, parmi autres lieux

This weekend we traveled to Cape Coast to see the Last Slave River and The Slave Castle at Elmina, among other places

Ici des photos:
Here are the photos:

When at the castle, I felt a lot of emotions, the first being discomfort.  I was very disturbed by the sight of the dungeons and the rest, but I need more time to process it all, but enjoy the photos.

L’état des femmes sur l’Université de Ghana /the state of women at the University of Ghana

I came to Africa for a number of reasons and one was to learn more about the state of women in Ghana.

So far I have observed the way women are treated  at the university and I found some interesting things :

One friend told me about the female TA in his class and how the professor commented on her attractiveness in front of the entire class…

Another friend told me that in her math class with only three students, the professor doesn’t look at her, but directs his lecture towards the other male students…

In a few of my classes I noticed that the professors are often a little condescending when speaking to the female students…

Everything is simply observations but it is very apparent to me that I am now living in a different system in every sense.  I have not internalized all that I have observed yet so I don ‘t have a concrete jugement, but it is coming….

A bientôt!
See you soon !

Ghana, mes cheveux et Highlife/ Ghana, my hair and Highlife

My hair and the weather in Ghana are not friends.  In fact, they hate each other.  In Ghana it is the rainy season currently and there is also humidity so my hair is simply untamable.  This is the reason for the lack of photos since I have been in Ghana.  I tried to twist up my hair my self…fail.  SO I went to the hairdresser today and here are the results:

I like them a lot! And I only paid 10 cedis (less than $10).  The hairdresser used wax which is a new product for my hair but it seems to keep the moisture in.  I hope to keep these twists in for 2 weeks (hopefully)!

Maintenant pour Highlife:
Now for Highlife

Highlife is the popular music style in Ghana.  You find it in clubs, family parties, the supermarket, everywhere.

It is upbeat music with an interesting bit of Caribbean music thrown in.

I can’t upload any videos so I will post some link of the Highlife songs I like:

ACCRA, NKRUMAH, KOFI ANNAN, OH MY!!!

This weekend I visited Accra, the capital of Ghana.  I saw slums, the court house, the large marketplace and finally, but definitely not the least, I went to the museum of Kwame Nkrumah

It is the place where he declared Ghana's independence from England in 1957.  There is a large golden statue of the leader and it is also his last resting place, amazing right?

Mais il va mieux...
But it gets better...

During the tour of the museum KOFI ANNAN arrived!!! I felt like a groupie...

L'homme me touche quand il a passe avant moi...sigh
The man even touched me when he passed...sigh

Mon état aprés Kofi Annan... attention au grand sourire
My post-Kofu Annan state...notice the giant cheese:

It was definitely the highlight of my day

GHANA: First week done!

BONJOUR MES AMIS!!!!
HELLO MY FRIENDS!!! I am sorry for not posting but I will try to post more often!

Maintenant les nouvelles importants:
Now for the important news!

I LOVE GHANA!!! we are at the University of Ghana now and it is absolutlely fabulous!! It is very different from Georgetown (obviously) but I feel like I am truly in Africa now!  My room is a little small but I have a balcony and a beautiful view!

The campus is HUGGGGGGGGGGE, you could fit 20 Georgetowns in the University f Ghana.  I already know I have to leave for my classes about half an hour early, maybe even earlier O_o I hope I don't get lost...

The food is wonderful and very cheap also! For example 1 cedi and 50 peswes (a little less than a 1 dollar) buys a complete meal!!! I love the jilof rice, the chicken kabobs, plantains etc.  And the drinks taste so much better, don't ask me why.  Maybe it is the fact that they use real sugar instead of corn syrup or maybe it's the glass bottle...I don't know but it is all good!!!

Ici:
OOO and the other day we took what they call trotros...they are these rickiety buses that alot of people use to get around.  Look here:

But I think that they seem more dangerous than they really are.  In fact I like them alot :)

Now we are registering for classes and I'm finding alot that seem good but this process is taking a little longer than it should.  The times for the classes are not up yet and no one really knows when they will be up....we are in Ghana lol

Je posterai plus photos plus tard!!
I will post more photos later!!!

à bientôt!
see you soon!!!
