Observations of a temporary expat / Les observations d’un expat temporaire

Being outside of the USA has allowed me to see just how central America is in the world…

Je peux à voir comment les Etats Unis sont centrale dans le monde à cause de mon présence au Ghana…

Ignoring the fact that Obama’s face is on everything from crackers to toothbrushes, not that I am complaining, America is the topic, example and also bashing point of choice for many of my Ghanaian professors.

Je vais ignorer le fait que le visage de Barack Obama est sur tout chose, y compris les bisquits et les brosses à dents, pas que je me plains, Les Etats-Unis sont le sujet, l’exemple et le point de dénigrement de un grand nombre de mes professeurs Ghanaian

Now I am nothing close to a blind supporter of the USA but I can’t help but feel a certain pride mixed in with some shame when confronted with the exaltation, both good and bad, of my country

Je ne soutiens aveuglément les Etats-Unis mais je ne peux pas m'empêcher de ressentir une certaine fierté et de honte quand j’entends l'exaltation de mon pays, les deux bon et mauvais.

When my professor brings up the Iran-Contra affair and the Iraq war there is no getting over the embarrassment  BUT when America is criticized by a few for entering Libya BASED ONLY on Ghana’s previous relations with the country, that is when I must respectfully disagree.

Par exemple, quand mon professeur parle au sujet de The Iran-Contra Affair et The Iraq War, je sens l’embarrasement MAIS quand les Etats-Unis sont critiqués par des personnes pour leur implication en Libye  qui est base uniquement sur les relations  précédentes entre le Ghana et la Libye, c’est le moment  quand je dois respectueusement en désaccord

I personally don’t have a concrete stance on NATO’s entrance into the Libyan conflict BUT Gadhafi has killed his own people for the sake of power and human right’s violations ARE human right’s violations…

Personnellement, je n’ai pas une position sur la question MAIS Gadhafi a tué ses propres citoyens pour le pouvoir et les violations des droits de l’homme SONT les violations des droits de l’homme...  

But I digress…

Mais je m'égare...

My large point is that the centrality of the USA here in Ghana is potent and although I am temporarily separated from my native country, I will never escape it completely, whether I like it or not. 

Mon grand point est la centralité des Etats-Unis au Ghana est puissant et bien je suis temporairement séparé de mon pays, je ne l’échappe jamais complètement, que je le veuille ou non.
